The legal status of foreigners implies the regulation of heterogeneous legal relations: civil law, family law, labor law, commercial law, etc. The specific feature of legal regulation is manifested on the side of the right holder, so we are talking about the legal status of a foreigner from the point of view of the domestic legal system and the differences in position in relation to domestic citizens.
Based on the principle of territoriality, each state applies its own legal frame regulating the legal status of foreigners located on its territory. However, international sources of laws profile national legislation, and thus customary international law sets the standard of international minimum protection, while the principle of non-discrimination as a general legal principle prohibits discrimination on the basis of nationality, race, and religion. International sources of laws on the rights of foreigners can be differentiated into: universal, regional and bilateral sources.
